Geografico Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vino Nobile is made principally from the Sangiovese grape grown around the town of Montepulciano, in the southeasterly portion of Siena province. Sangiovese is locally known as Prugnolo. Other grape varieties that may constitute up to 30% of the blend are Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo. While these same varieties (excepting Mammolo) are used in Chianti, Vino Nobile is a bigger, longer-lasting wine, primarily because grapes routinely get riper in this area and the growers have not been subject to the same market pressure for greater production. Cerraia is produced for Geografico by Federico Carletti, owner of the Poliziano estate. Carletti is known for the exceptionally high quality of his wines. His Poliziano brand has received numerous 3 glass awards from Gambero Rosso. Carletti was one of the region’s pioneers in the use of French barrique for aging Vino Nobile, having completely abandoned traditional cooperage by the mid-80’s. Vino Nobile can best be compared to a super-Tuscan or a Brunello, with a clear price advantage over the latter and many of the former. The wines repay cellaring and in the best years will not reach maturity until 3-5 years after the harvest. |
